At Home Exercise: Running

Or should we say at home exercise or around the home? Lots of people run at home and job in their neighborhoods. Remember, a good gait (running gait) is super important to overall physical function of humans. If you want to check how someone is moving, just check their running gait.

But Who Wants to Run in the Rain?

Yes, the answer is probably almost no one but how inspiring is it to see someone who got out there that day and ripped it up in the drizzle? It’s fantastic!

You must understand it’s not about how the activity will go. Yes, it’s raining again and you’re not sure if you want to go running or go to the gym.

The story will always be the same and you’ll ponder whether you should go and do the exercise. Some folks worry whether or not it will go well or if they’ll get a good workout.

Others are concerned that it won’t be fun or that they don’t have the right shoes for the rain. The key is to realize that there will always be a million reasons to skip the activity. Maybe it’s not running, maybe it’s some weight training or an online aerobics class. There are a multitude of activities out there and a million excuses that we come up with to skip them. The key is to do the activity and not worry about how it goes.

Though we may not notice, perfection hunting can get us all. We think the workout won’t go great or that the run will be too cold so we don’t bother. This search for the optimal conditions can leave us on the sidelines when we should be out there participating. And trust me, whatever you’re worried about, odds are it won’t actually turn out that way in real life. So, don’t worry about getting out there. Just go.

You’ll learn, grow, feel better and achieve if you go no matter how long, tough or lousy it turns out.

Running Tips

  • Start out really slow and go for a very short run (under 10 minutes).
  • Don’t be afraid to have a tiny forward lean. Think of a business person walking quickly with a briefcase, that’s the slight bend forward you’re looking for.
  • Run in running shoes. Running shoes are 25mm in the back and 11mm in the front. They’re made to roll you forward. Cross trainers, knits and other shoes are not.

Whether you run at home or on the treadmill or on the spot in front of the TV, make sure you try a little bit of running. As humans, we’re literally meant to do it as an integral part of our physical activity. Give it a try and don’t worry about the rain.
